Just as there are many types of doulas, there are also many roads to becoming a doula. It may seem overwhelming to figure out where to begin.

The first step of any doula path is going to be a training/workshop. Usually this is a weekend experience where you get to gather with other like-minded individuals, and learn in a hands-on manner.

Each certifying organization has different requirements and fees to be trained and subsequently certified. Be sure to consider these before committing to an organization, as you don’t want to be surprised once you’ve already started down a path!

Other things to consider:

  • Does this organization represent my vision of birth/postpartum support?

  • Is this doula program accredited or recognized as a professional body?

  • Is this organization welcoming and inclusive?

  • Can I grow with this organization? Or would I need to seek out other organizations for other aspects of birth work that I’m interested in?

Transitions: Doula & Life Services is always actively recruiting the right individuals to join our team. Part of the requirement to be a Transitions doula is that you have been trained and are seeking certification.
